Concert Review

Nadasurabhi presented a vocal concert by Vidwan Sikkil Gurucharan, a young, well known, highly successful and talented artist from Chennai. Vidwan  Gurucharan has been performing for over a decade in India and abroad and is now a most sought after artist.  The way he sang the varnam in 2 speeds with neraval for charanam brought expectant smiles on every one’s face.  As he moved on to the Vasantha with brisk swara prasthara  he had set the standard for a brilliant performance to continue.  His elaboration of Kedaragowla and Bhairavi were classic and rendering of songs had easy flow.  His uncomplicated yet interesting swaraprasthara was appealing.  RTP in Saraswathi was quite short but since it was the fag end, it was apt.  On the whole his presentation was pleasing.  He was supported by highly accomplished, senior artists, both on violin and percussion instruments.  Vidwan H.K. Venkataram on Violin gave the full essence of Bhairavi in reply to main artist.  His following was excellent.  Vidwan Arjun Kumar on Mridangam and Vidwan Giridhar Udupa on Ghatam were in high spirits attracting great applause from the audience and repeated ‘sabhash’ from the main artist.  The hall was over flowing, even after extra seating arrangements were made with out leaving an inch of space in the hall.  The concert was highly appreciated.
