Youth Festival 2016 Review

20.2.2016: On the first day, two young and upcoming vocal artists were featured. Vidushi Yoga Kirtana, a senior disciple of Sangeetha Kala Acharya, Sangeetha Surabhi Vidushi Neela Ramgopal presented the opening concert.  She made good use of the time – 90 minutes given to her.  Her selection of ragas and songs were well balanced.  With her sweet and melodious voice she could capture the attention of the audience.  Starting with an invocation in hamsadhwani, she moved on  to Mukhari, Amruthavarshini and chose Todi as the main ragam of the day, which she presented neately for the song ‘Nannu brochutaku’.  She concluded with a Thillana in Desh.

She was ably supported by Vidushi Apoorva Krishna on Violin with a good following and by Vidwan Nikshit Puttur on Mridanga whose tani avartanam was remarkable. The concert was well attended.

List of songs:

1.  Mooladhara murte             Hamsadhwani

2.  Enthaninne                        Mukhari (R,N @ kanulara and S)

4.  Nannubrochutaku             Todi (R,S)  Tani avartanam.

5.  Thillana                             Desh

The second concert was by Vidushi Varijashree, a young artist with a unique style.  Her selection of songs were rare and but heavy.  Her singing was totally uninhibited and full of confidence.  She sang with ease, with control over the layam.  She chose Hamsanandi ragam for detail rendition, as the main – a difficult and a challenging one!  But did well. Her versatility and unique style was appreciated by the audience.

Vidwan Achyuta Rao on the violin, showed his maturity in his brilliant following. Vidwan B.S.Prashanth also played very well, with a brisk and vibrant tani avartanam.

The audience were in good number and gave a very good feed back about both the concerts.

21.2.2016: Day 2 started with the musical fire works of ‘Kalarava’ instrumental ensemble.  The young artists, all below the age of 25, were trained by Mridangam virtuoso Vidwan Anoor Anathakrishna Sharma.  The band consisted of a flute, violin, mridangam, khanjira, morsing, drums, key-board and several other percussion instruments.  Music was composed by AAK Sharma. They played ragas like Mohana, Shanmukhapriya and Vachaspati.

As the flute and violin played the ragams and songs, sequentially, the percussion instruments were introduced at appropriate intervals.  There was tani avartanam also including konnakol.  The boys were energetic, creative and vibrant. This highly talented team consisted of: Subramanya Shastry, Aniruddha Nadig, Govind Balasubramanian, Vinod Shyam Anoor, Sunaad Anoor and Tirumale Gopi Shravan.

They received a big applause from the huge crowd!

The final programme consisted of paying tribute to the saint composers Purandaradasa and Thyagaraja, by singing the Pillari geethas and Pancharatna kritis.  The rendition was led by Vidushi Neela Ramgopal.  More than 25 vocalists were there on the stage with her to sing along with a veena, violin and mridangam.  The harmonious group singing was a fitting finale for the two day event.
