Karthikeyan's Effortless Flute Recital at Nadasurabhi.
On Sunday, the 16th of August, Nadasurabhi presented one more of its well chosen concerts. An artist's mastery over his instrument can very easily be perceived by the audience, through his own ease and comfort level during the performance as also his interaction with the accompanying artists and the listeners. Vidwan Karthikeyan during the flawless flute recital, demonstrated precisely the same. Right from the opening varnam in Sriragam, he showed total control over the instrument. Switching sharply to the one and a half speed, he even left the accompanying artists foxed just for a moment.
The choice and sequence of ragas and known compositions, greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the rasikas. The extended brigas in Dharini Thelusukonti, got him several "wah"s. The entire structuring of ragam, sahitya and swaraprasthara of the main piece in Kamboji was mature and satisfying. It will not be an exaggeration to say that he really did his guru, the flute maestro Dr.N.Ramani proud by his performance.
The absence of neraval in the entire concert was however felt by traditionalists.
Vidwan HS Sudhindra, who had sponsored the concert, through the Suswaralaya College of Music, while presenting a vote of thanks was appreciative of the packed hall of enthusiastic listeners who stayed on till the end of the concert. He indicated that the rasikas, by their participation are an important component in the survival of this great Indian art form.
Accompanying artists were Vidwan Mysore Satheesh on Violin, Vidwan Adamya on Mridangam and Vidwan Phanindra Bhaskara on Ghatam. All three of them gave enthusiastic and whole hearted support to the main artist, in their respective instruments.
