T.N.S.Krishna Carnatic Vocal Concert

Sri.TNS Krishna, son and disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Padmabhushan Madurai Sri.T.N.Seshagopalan has blossomed into a mature carnatic vocalist. He has occupied senior slots during the recent Madras music season as well as Rama Navami Concerts this year in Bangalore. He is noted for his rich manodharma. While his performances are a pleasant listening experience for any rasika, his “kanakku” embellishments during swaraprasthara are a connoisseur’s delight.

Concert Review

Tradition and talent vied with each other in the electrifying performance of Vidwan TNS Krishna from Chennai, during his three hour Carnatic vocal recital under the auspices of Nadasurabhi in Koramangala, on the 21st of June 2009.

Privileged to be under the constant expert guidance of his father Sri.TN Seshagopalan, Krishna’s concert was steeped in the traditional concert format. Also, his individual flair for special effects, shone through the entire concert. Krishna’s blemish less young voice was perfectly aligned to sruti and laya. The elaboration of Shanmukhapriya was greatly appreciated. The main piece chosen was a Ragam Thanam Pallavi, sung in two ragas Lalitha and Kalyani. Navigating through the two ragas, in all the three sections, with great intricacy, without losing the aesthetic appeal was a real work of genius.

The only comment heard about possible improvement, is that the Karnataka audience would be more pleased to listen to a few new Devarnamas, instead of oft repeated pieces like Rama Manthrava Japiso.

Overall it was a brilliant performance, well received by a packed audience at the Heritage Academy Hall. Accompanying him were senior artists Charulatha Ramanujam on violin, HS Sudhindra on mridangam and SN Narayanamurthy on Ghatam, who greatly raised the standard of the concert with their sterling performances.
