Concert Review

Sri. Ramachandran has absorbed all the essential good ingredients from his predecessors of the Maharajapuram family. The perfect punching presentation of the sahitya, alignment to sruti and laya immediately raised the standard of the concert right from the beginning. The artist has developed his voice which has a deep resonant quality through the entire range, that makes it extremely impressive. Also, the clarity of the words of the composition is exceptional that one can take down the sahitya during the presentation of a kriti! To achieve this clarity without sacrificing the beauty of the raga is no mean achievement. Sri. Ramachandran needed no separate announcement of each raga, as his opening phrase itself adequately announced it to the knowledgeable audience.

The opening Begada Varna with some brisk kalpanaswara itself set the tone for an enjoyable evening. Mixing popular songs with lesser known ones, the selection had both depth and variety. Varali was a real treat. The main piece was the  Thyagaraja's grand piece in Kalyani- Nidhi Chaala Sukhamaa. The artist embellished different songs with varied levels of Alapana, Neraval and kalpanaswara which enabled the audience's anticipation and appreciation in good balance. Immensely popular for his delectable range of Tukkadas, Sri.Ramachandran satisfied all with a string of these beautiful pieces. His popularity was evident from the whole bunch of 'chits' he received as listener's choice.

The concert was made most enjoyable due to the excellent support given by Sri.M.S. Govindaswamy on violin, Sri. Arjun Kumar on Mridangam and Sri. Guruprasanna on Khanjira. The Thani was also an exciting experience
